For this assignment I have chosen to use a song called “Brighten Up” which is created by my friends’ band “Chutes“.
00:15 – 01:11
I chose this song as I was given permission to use the song by one of the band members, Elliot Thornton-Smith, bass:
This will avert any copyright issues.
Soo.. My inspiration? This next clip is along the lines of how I’m going to try and make mine:
I have chosen this clip as I love the movement of the text, accompanied by the images used throughout. Lyrics are emphasised by subtle things, such as change of colour or the direction of movement, which is what I plan to include in mine.
This is another clip that I very much liked. There is a variation in fonts and also uses images to reinforce the words being said.
This last clip includes lots of different effects and animation on the text itself. I also like the colour scheme; black and white, which are contrasting colours. The colour scheme also provides the viewer with the clip’s seriousness and dark nature.
So now I have an idea on what to include in my video, I need to start planning the font styles and colour schemes that will be used throughout my video.
I have put together some thumbnail sketches of some possible colours to use, along with 2 different type faces that I think will work well in my video:
The fonts that I will be choosing to use are ‘Century Gothic’ and ‘Cracked’. Both of which are simple type faces. However, I’m swaying more towards the ‘Cracked’ font as it’s more stylish in my opinion; it’s different from your average San Serif type face because of its appearance of being eroded. I’ve also attempted several colour scheme ideas;
After playing around with typefaces and colour schemes I’ve decided not to use ‘cracked’. This is because I don’t think the font suits the song. It’s quite a joyful, upbeat song and the eroded appearance of the font isn’t something that really associates with this kind of song. Instead of using this font, I have chosen to use ‘Helvetica Bold’ as it complies to what I originally wanted; something simple and bold. I have also decided on a colour scheme;
Now that I have found a suitable font and colour scheme, I’m going to start constructing a storyboard to put down the ideas I have in my head including movement of text, placement, etc. The only hard part is trying to to go too out of my depth and think of something too advanced for me to create:
These plans are not conclusive (duhh!). Experimentation is inevitable!
My first attempt at creating a kinetic typography piece got corrupted or something silly like that so I had to start all over again. This may have had a positive impact, however, as it gave me a chance to reflect on what I did previously and allowed me to make changes to my original idea. You can view my finished product here.
